International Young Screen Entrepreneur award 2010



After a global search for the brightest and best international young screen entrepreneur, the International Young Screen Entrepreneur 2010 is Nayla Al Khaja, the UAE’s first female film producer and director who owns and runs the production company D-SEVEN motion pictures. Its aim is to produce commercial feature films for the Middle East. Nayla is a former winner of ‘Best Emirati Filmmaker’ at the Dubai International Film Festival in 2007 and ‘Emirates Woman of the Year’ in 2005. For more information on D-SEVEN see www.d-seven.com

The jury commended Nayla as “a real leader in a truly difficult market”, citing her confidence and passion, and that she is a “role model for others who can affect change for women in film and TV in the UAE and across the region.”

The jury also gave a special commendation to Elena Fortes Acosta, Director of the Ambulante Documentary Film Festival in Mexico.

The finalists
The Screen Entrepreneur finalists represented many aspects of the film industry, including development, production, distribution, sales, exhibition, marketing, promotion, education, and retail. All are advocates for film and television in their respective countries.

The eleven finalists travelled to the UK in October 2010 to take part in a tour of the UK film/television industry, meeting with key people in London, Bristol and Cardiff, to forge relationships with, and an understanding of, the UK business.

Nayla's Biography

Nayla Al Khaja the owner of D-SEVEN Motion Pictures, a UAE based production house that is dedicated to the sole purpose of producing top-notch visual productions. Nayla has produced and directed three films namely: Unveiling Dubai (2004), Arabana (2006) and Once (2009). Edward R. Pressman, producer of The Crow film series, Wall Street (1987) and American Psycho (2000) had this to say about Arabana: ‘Gorgeous and disturbing’. She also runs a monthly world cinema club that is free to the public (www.thesceneclub.com) and is part of D-Seven’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

She is also the founder of BLOOM! Cine start-ups to help first time film makers produce their first short for a 70% discount by partnering up with industry professionals such as Kodak.

Nayla Al Khaja visited the Melbourne International Film Festival through the Abu Dhabi Film Commission. She was the first UAE producer ever to take part in their Film Market which is open only to Producers from Australia and New Zealand. She also took part as a speaker alongside Deepa Mehta at The Circle conference which is organized the Abu Dhabi Film Commission.
