Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi, UAE - Top 10 Precarious Buildings - TIME

Pisa's famous tilt may have been an accident, but the tipsy new addition to Abu Dhabi's skyline is not. The United Arab Emirates' Capital Gate tower pushed its Tuscan cousin out of the limelight this week when the Guinness Book of World Records certified the new building as the "World's Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower." It's not clear how stiff the competition for that category ever really was, but the 35-story structure does lean a gravity defying 18 degrees — nearly five times further than its Italian inspiration. Like Bilbao, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, the UAE built Capital Gate to put its premier city on the world's architectural map. The sloping result — "designed to provide no symmetry" — looks a little like a shiny drunk slouching against a wall. Built with over 15,000 cubic meters of concrete reinforced with 10,000 tons of steel, the tower houses over 20,000 feet of "premium" office space and a five-star Hyatt. Whether hotel gu

Why Dubai's Islamic austerity is a sham – sex is for sale in every bar | World news | The Observer

Dancers in a Dubai hotel. Photograph: Rex Features The bosomy blonde in a tight, low-cut evening dress slid on to a barstool next to me and began the chat: Where are you from? How long are you here? Where are you staying? I asked her what she did for a living. "You know what I do," she replied. "I'm a whore." As I looked around the designer bar on the second floor of the glitzy five-star hotel, it was obvious that every woman in the place was a prostitute. And the men were all potential punters, or at least window-shoppers. Why Dubai's Islamic austerity is a sham – sex is for sale in every bar | World news | The Observer

Qatar delays plan to scrap its visa-on-arrival facility

Manama: Qatar's May 1 plan to scrap its visa-on-arrival facility for nationals of 33 countries, including the US and the UK, has been delayed. Qatar last month announced plans that it would change the rule and apply a visa reciprocity system that would affect the nationals of countries that did not offer Qataris visas upon their arrival. Under the planned system, nationals from countries that impose pre-arrival visas on Qataris will have to get their visas from Qatari embassies regardless of the purpose of their visit. The change was scheduled for May 1, but several countries whose nationals would be affected by the new rule, have requested more time from Qatar's foreign ministry before its implementation, Qatar News Agency (QNA) said. A foreign ministry official said that the requests were being studied. “It has, therefore, been decided that the existing visa-on-arrival scheme at the Doha International Airport for the citizens of the 33 countries will remain u

Cameroon's conjoined twins help spread Islam

Cameroonian conjoined twins Pheinbom and Shevoboh were seen as a bad omen when born, but their successful separation by Saudi surgeons has changed their lives - and the faith of some in their village. They were joined at the chest, abdomen and pelvis when born and some of the delivery nurses in Babanki Tungo, a village in north-west Cameroon, were so shocked by the "strange birth" that they ran out of the small clinic. The basic medical services in Babanki Tungo were ill-equipped to care for the girls and, following an internet appeal, the Saudi king agreed to pay for them to be flown to Saudi Arabia for surgery in 2007. The 16-hour operation succeeded in separating the twins and now they each have their own stomach. read more  Avatar (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) [Blu-ray]

Dubai to Abu Dhabi by bus

yesterday I travelled to Abu Dhabi by Emirates express bus from Bur Dubai's Al Ghubaiba bus station to Abudhabi. The journey took just under 2hours although it seemed less than that. You will be easily distracted by the massive construction going on in Dubai and the contrast in Abu Dhabi. The buses are very comfortable (better than National express in my opinion). The ride was smooth and not fast. We paid 20 UAE dirhams (about 4 pounds) for the journey to Abu Dhabi and 15AED on the return Journey. At both stations there was a bus waiting so we did not have to wait. I asked dubai taxi drivers how much it would cost to AD and they said at least 250 AED (AED and Dirhams is the same) for the same trip. The seats in the front are reserved for women and families. This is good for ladies travelling alone. Taxis in abu dhabi dont have the minumum 10dirham charge like Dubai. That was a pleasant suprise as my journey from the bus station was only 5.5 AED. back in dubai today almost 6 pm

Its my first trip in dubai at this time of the year...not soo hot. its also a very busy time with lots of events happening around dubai. Dubai 1975 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Here is a film made by the BBC in 1975 about Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. At that point he was the ruler's son, but he would become the man who helped create modern Dubai. It is a glimpse of Dubai just before it started to become the strange fantasy world it is today. It has a great creepy British under-secretary for foreign affairs, plus very good tartan fashions. It is also wonderfully shot. The cameraman was Erik Durschmied. He shot many BBC factual films in the 60s and 70s. I think he films in an incredibly modern way. His camera does exactly what you would do if you were in the room - gazing and flitting between details - yet it manages to always remain beautifully composed. BBC - Adam Curtis Blog: Dubai 1975

Planned port could distort tourist resort

LAMU, Kenya — The evening call to prayer here is like a summons, for everyone on the island. As the sun dives toward the ocean, the Muslim residents stream into the mosques, little boys wearing impossibly bright white skullcaps, their mothers in diaphanous, black head-to-toe gowns. The last of the bikini-clad tourists pick themselves up from the beach, dust off the powdery sand and head back to the hotel for a drink. Lamu is one of the last outposts of pure Swahili culture. Lamu has been like this for decades, a historic seafaring place where modernity has been gracefully folded into traditional culture without completely spoiling it. The snaky alleyways of the island’s old town (which the United Nations recognizes as a World Heritage site), the omnipresent smells of donkey dung and sweetly rotting fruit and the crescent-sailed dhows plying the sea make the island feel like a glass museum case — one with a living culture inside. But all that may be about to change. To the dismay of man

Confusion over Burj Khalifa website owner persists

Dubai: The internet domain name burjkhalifa.com, which was snapped up by a cyber squatter at the very moment when the tower was renamed from Burj Dubai to Burj Khalifa during Monday evening’s opening ceremony, is obviously changing ownership every day. While web databases first revealed the owner as a person giving his name as Shakil Farooqi, based in Karachi, the ownership later changed to Abdulla Matar from Dubai, owner of the Emirates Auction website, who, however, denied having registered burjkhalifa.com under his name when asked by Gulf News. On Thursday, according to domain registration databases, the ownership switched back to a person called Saeed Hafiz, giving an address in Karachi again. Meanwhile, Gulf News received an anonymous email with an @burjdubai.com appendix by somebody saying he was “the rightful owner”. “I am the rightful owner and I registered this domain on 4/1/10,” the email said. “My reason behind purchasing this domain was not monetary gain. Virus, Spyware, & Malware Removal Guides http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-pcsprotector What this programs does: PcsProtector is a rogue anti-spyware program that is promoted and installed through the use of Trojans that pretend to be programs necessary to view certain online videos. When you download and install this Trojan it will install the rogue and configure it to start automatically when your computer starts. This same Trojan will also create fake malware files on your computer with random filenames that are then detected as viruses when PcsProtector scans your computer. The program, though, will state that it will not remove these files until you first purchase it. This is obviously a scam as the program is only detecting the files it created in the first place. In reality, these files are harmless and do not pose any risk to your computer. Thus this programs scan results should be ignored. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com
